Wondervu, Colorado: location and a little history. Wondervu was officially named in 1914, with a few hardy mountain dwellers putting their community interests on the map. As late as 1941, A U.S. Geological Survey described it as “Wondervu, a summer colony on State Highway 72, about 1.5 mi. E. of Pine Cliff Station on Moffat Branch of Denver and Salt Lake Railroad.” Even now, what the Post Office and the local residents call Wondervu might differ a bit – the Wondervu ZIP codes 80403 and 80471 are part of Golden and Pinecliffe respectively.

Gold, mules and wagons. State Highway 72 was originally the Coal Creek and Black Hawk Wagon Toll Road, providing a link over the Front Range of the Rockies to the mining camp at Black Hawk, where gold had been discovered in 1859. The eastern part of the Wagon Toll Road, Coal Creek Canyon Road, was surveyed in 1883. After it was washed out in 1894, the canyon residents agreed to have it rebuilt from the canyon’s mouth to Coal Creek’s source on the eastern face of Thorodin Mountain, the site of present-day Wondervu.

Wagons, trains and automobiles. In 1902, the Denver Northwest & Pacific Railroad began construction on a rail line beginning at Denver. It passed through Coal Creek Canyon, summitting near what is now Wondervu Pass and continuing down through South Boulder Canyon to Tolland. Coal Creek Canyon Road was finally paved beginning in 1952. The pavement reached Wondervu three years later, making the area around Wondervu more accessible to those who enjoy life at 9,000 feet above sea level.

Wondervu Attractions: Wondervu’s unsurpassed views of the Arapahoe Mountains and Continental Divide bring visitors by car, bike and motorcycle from all over the country as they traverse Highway 72 on their way from Denver to pick up the Peak to Peak Highway at Nederland. Wondervu is a stone’s throw from the Gross Reservoir, a jewel-like 440-acre lake with a ten-mile shoreline, which invites kayaking, rowing, and canoeing. The reservoir is noted for its plentiful trout, which also populate a pond where children can try their luck as anglers. Within eleven minutes of the rock climbers’ paradise at El Dorado Canyon State Park, Wondervu is also twenty minutes from the skiing at Eldora Mountain Resort. And it’s only about thirty minutes from both Golden and Boulder.

Where to eat in Wondervu. The Wondervu café is known far and wide for its fresh Mexican cuisine. Just picture chunky, cheesy guacamole and hot crisp tortilla chips for an appetizer, or a “Mexican Creampuff” dessert – a supersized sopaipilla loaded with vanilla ice cream and mounds of whipped cream, all topped off with cinnamon sugar and honey. And their breakfast burritos bring admirers from miles around. Then there’s the Black Forest Inn in nearby Nederland, with its unique mix of German, American, and Colorado cooking, including – for lunch yet – roast elk and duck, at surprisingly reasonable prices. If you want to stay overnight in Wondervu to get a feel for the the area you’ll want to check in at the Eldora Lodge, which provides a nice breakfast. It is in Wondervu, not Eldora, but sometimes a name is just a name.
