Wheat Ridge CO location and background. With a community of over 32,000 residents, Wheat Ridge is located west of Denver in the heart of Jefferson County. The city is between Arvada and Lakewood north and south, and east to west it’s between Denver and the beautiful Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Founded in 1859 in what began as a farming community, the town supported neighboring mining operations, supplying produce and dairy products to the endless stream of workers pulling coal and ore – with the occasional flashes of gold and silver mining excitement up in the nearby hills – out of the earth’s bounty. Although the city is now a thriving community, there was a time in the late 1960’s when it seemed it might be acquired by surrounding cities. This prompted formalo incorporation as a city to establish its independence in the best interest of its residents. The name of the town is really Wheat Ridge, with two words, but we sometimes see it referred to as Wheatridge. No matter how you spell it, it’s an attractive community with a solid “Heartland” background. There aren’t many places where you’ll find the high school nickname “Farmers.” In Wheat Ridge, that’s a sign of a proud heritage.

History and employment. Up until the mid-20th century, Wheat Ridge was known as the world’s largest producer of carnations. Other agricultural products were plentiful as well. The year 1905 saw the establishment of a sanatorium for Evangelic Lutherans who ministered to fellow Lutherans who were suffering from tuberculosis. The associate facilities were used for piloting Lutheran social service programs, and the location was host to training centers for social workers and chaplains. Now, as a continuation of that long and honorable line of service, Wheat Ridge is home to the Exempla-Lutheran Medical Center which employs over 2500 people. It is also home to businesses such as Kaiser Permanente, Medved Colorado, Wal-Mart and PetSmart.
