Wellington, Colorado: sweet beets. In 1903, the Great Western Sugar Company opened a sugar beet processing plant in Fort Collins. Their choice of location proved to be a boon for the farmers and ranchers of the upper Boxelder Valley. The North Poudre Irrigation Company took advantage of the situation to plant 1400 acres of sugar beets, an ideal crop for the soil of the region. North Poudre then set about turning the land around its planting into a town, and persuaded Colorado & Southern Railroad to build a rail line to them. The C&SRR’s division superintendent, C.L. Wellington, offered his name for the community, and the railroad went one step further by providing other area farmers with sugar beet seeds.

An agricultural paradise. One of the offshoots of sugar beet cultivation around Wellington was the widespread use of left-over sugar beet tops and pulp to feed lambs, eventually leading to the area proclaiming itself “The Lamb Feeding Capital of the World.” To preserve the nutrient content of their soil, the sugar beet farmers would alternate the beets with alfalfa. They used the alfalfa, along with corn, to support their livestock over the winter, and also planted cherry orchards. Sugar beet production diminished until it was, by the 1960’s, non-existent, but has recently made a modest comeback. While industry has made significant inroads into the Fort Collins/Loveland area in the past two decades, agriculture remains at the heart of Wellington’s economy.
