Superior, Colorado: a rollicking past in the coal mining days. Long before Superior officially became a town, it was a railroad community in Colorado’s Front Range coal mining area. The first settlers arrived there in 1861, following the “Pike’s Peak or Bust” gold rush and William Hakes’ discovery of coal on his land. The town had a school, church, livery stable, pool halls and saloons, boarding houses and a barber shop, and a general merchandise store – everything a 19th century frontier town could offer.

Superior or not, the mines played out. When the last of the Boulder area coal mines closed in 1945, Superior saw nearly half of its residents pull up stakes and move on. The roughly 250 who remained were farmers and ranchers, and the town’s population stabilized close to that number until the 1980s.

Reawakening the old town. In 1987, the Rock Creek Ranch located south of Superior was subdivided and opened for residential development, and today the town’s population numbers nearly 12,000. The Rock Creek development has been joined by the Sagamore subdivision to the west. Today Superior covers some four square miles, with nearly a large fraction of that – six hundred acres – dedicated to parklands and open space, and over 25 miles of trails.

Superior Colorado attractions. Among Superior’s parks are Purple Park, with its two ponds, bike path, and tree-shaded stream, in the Rock Creek subdivision, and Grasso Park, with town’s original jail and a settler’s house behind the Town Hall. And those 25 plus miles of trail head directly into Boulder County Open Space, opening it to hikers and mountain bikers. Superior is also an easy drive from Eldorado Canyon State Park, one of America’s premier rock climbing sites. The canyon also offers excellent trout fishing, picnicking, and wildflower viewing. Summers include the Old West Chili Fest celebration, inviting Colorado’s best chili chefs to vie for recognition from the International Chili Society. If you need your “fix” of big-city activities, keep in mind Superior is just 22 miles northeast of Denver along Highway 170, so Superior CO homes enjoy easy access to all the Mile-High City’s sporting and cultural venues, museums, shopping, dining, and business opportunities. And Boulder is even closer, just five minutes away.

Where to dine in Superior. Superior has its quota of fast-food eateries, but one of its more popular dining spots is Abo’s Pizza. Readers of the Boulder Weekly have voted Abo’s New York Style pizza the city’s best in three of the last four years.

Superior today. In 2005 the Superior Parks Department devised a Master Plan to guide development of its parklands and open spaces as residential and commercial developments. The Superior Marketplace and the Flatiron Crossing Mall on the Broomfield side have brought restaurants, department stores, and a variety of retail outlets to within minutes of Superior’s doorsteps. And as the town continues to grow, so will the number of businesses it attracts.
