Sheridan, Colorado: a brief history. The town of Sheridan had its beginnings with the establishment of U.S. Army post south of Denver in 1887. Originally called Fort Sheridan in honor of General Phillip Sheridan, the Fort became a magnet for the railroads, hotels, boarding houses, saloons, and businesses to supply the needs of military personnel and their families. Sheridan, at one point, had four railroad depots serving both the Southern Pacific and Denver and Rio Grande lines, and its growth coincided with theirs. The countryside around Sheridan became an important sugar beet production area.
In 1888, General Sheridan asked that his name be given to a military facility near Chicago, then called Fort Logan, so a switch was made and, while the town of Sheridan kept its name, the adjoining military post became Fort Logan. This may have been the most economical move the Army ever made – they moved two posts across the country without having to turn a wheel! The town of Sheridan was incorporated in 1890 and Fort Logan remained active until 1946, when it was decommissioned. Most of the land it had occupied was sold to developers or reserved for open space and public use.
Sheridan was severely damaged by the June flooding of the Platte River in 1965, which destroyed much of the eastern half of the city and its City Hall. The City Hall and all the city offices are now located in a new City hall built in 1987.
Sheridan attractions. Located about twenty minutes from downtown Denver, Sheridan offers its residents the chance to enjoy the Mile High City’s four professional sports teams, the world-class Denver Zoo and Museum of Natural History, the Denver Symphony, and all its dining and shopping venues as well. For golfing enthusiasts, Sheridan is ideally situated just minutes from both the Englewood Public Golf Course and the Cherry Hills Country Club. Cherry Creek State Park, with its 880-acre fishing and boating lake, is about a half hour from Sheridan. The park has twelve miles of hiking trail, a riding stable, and in the winter it is a great place for cross-county skiing and snowshoeing. With all that in the immediate vicinity, an additional advantage is that Sheridan is only an hour and a half from Estes and Rocky Mountain National Parks.
Sheridan today. Sheridan is a one-mile square, largely industrialized section of the greater Denver area which is actively taking steps to be a part of the healthy economic growth in the area. Sheridan is in the process, with its River Point Project, of developing a retail district bordered by the Platte River and the Englewood Country Club. The project will be built on the sites of two former landfills and will include, in addition 750,000 square feet of retail space, access via pedestrian and vehicular bridges.
