The price for single family residences average about $200K, with the extremes in the range being as low as $52000 for a one-room rustic cabin with an outhouse. Pinecliffe, Colorado: railroad, resorts and sports. Pinecliffe, originally called Cliff, began as the site of a Denver and Rio Grande Railroad siding and water tower. In 1907, the railroad added a second tower so that their steam trains, after climbing the steep Coal Creek Canyon grade, could have both the engines and rear cars supplied with water simultaneously. They also added a passenger depot, changed the name of the station to Pine Cliff – when the final “e” was added seems to be a mystery – and had the foundations for the resort town which Pinecliffe eventually became.

Pinecliffe was remarkable among U.S. resorts because in the 1920s, “Wink’s Lodge,” built in the Lincoln Hill area of Pinecliffe, was one of only four resorts in the entire country eatablished specifically as a vacation spot for African-Americans. Langston Hughes, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Lena Horne were among its regular guests. The Lodge remained open until the death of its founder, Wendell “Winks” Hamlet, in 1965. Not far from Wink’s Lodge was Camp Nizhoni, a branch of the Denver YMCA which was built for African-American girls.

Wink’s Lodge and the remnants of the Lincoln Hills Resort have been purchased by the James P. Beckwourth Mountain Club, which is planning a restoration of Wink’s Lodge to its 1920’s glory.

Pinecliffe was also a popular resort for Denver area fishermen, who would arrive on special “fish trains.” And Pinecliffe supplied the City of Denver with much of its summertime ice, harvested during the winter from frozen mountain ponds and stored in sawdust in an ice shed. Both the pond and a few timbers of the ice shed remain.

Pineciffe is unusual in that it straddles both Gilpin and Boulder Counties. The crystal-clear, trout-filled South Boulder Creek is the dividing line.

Pinecliffe attractions. Pinecliffe is only five minutes from Gross Reservoir, a small but breathtakingly beautiful fishing and boating lake nestled in the Front Range foothills and affording visitors stunning views of the Continental Divide. The lake, fed by South Boulder Creek, is known for its trout, and there is even a trout-stocked children’s fishing pond. Only canoes, kayaks, and rowboats are allowed on the lake, and there is no swimming, wading, or scuba diving permitted.

Pinecliffe is about 20 miles from the small gambling casinos of Blackhawk and Central City, 20 minutes from the El Dorado Ski Area, and a half-hour from Golden. It’s also an easy commute for those who work in Boulder or Interlocken, and Denver is less than an hour away.
