Morrison, Colorado: a brief history. The streets of Morrison, Colorado, while today are home to its charming Old Town shops and restaurants were, hundreds of million of years ago, part of an Interstate highway traveled by giants.
Morrison, a Colorado country town with a population currently numbering less than five hundred, is, surprisingly, less than twenty minutes – although if journeys in time account for anything, more like a hundred years – from the outskirts of Denver.
Morrison was once, in a time out of mind, the beachfront property of dinosaurs dwelling on the edge of a prehistoric sea. In 1877, three years after city founder George Morrison moved his family into what is now the historically registered “Cliff House Hotel” and established the “Morrison Stone, Lime and Townsite Company,” geologist Arthur Lakes unearthed some of the largest troves of dinosaur bones which had ever, to that date, been found.
The red rocks of Morrison, rich in iron oxide whch causes the coppery hue, gave their name to the unique open-air Red Rocks Amphitheater. The amphitheater, built as part of the federal CCC and WPA programs in the 1940s, is guarded by the twin 300-foot red giants, “Creation Rock” and “Ship Rock,” which provide the ampitheater with unparalleled acoustics. Its elevated location gives concertgoers open sight lines to vistas of Hogback Ridge, Green Mountain, the Denver skyline, and Soda Lake. The absence of nearby urban development guarantees them amazing starry nights under which to enjoy their music.
Morrison: What to do and where to eat. Among Morrison’s other attractions are its proximity to the Red Rocks/Dakota Ridge Trail, which takes both bikers and hikers directly past the amphitheater; its Dinosaur Ridge Visitor Center, run by a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the areas many fossil digs; its Natural History Museum with hands-on tours allowing visitors to handle real dinosaur bones; and, for the golfer, the private Red Rocks Country Club, and the Fossil Trace and Fox Hollow municipal courses.
Some of Morrison’s most popular restaurants are The Fort, noted for its wild game dishes, Café Prague, with European cuisine, and, for Margarita and Mexican food lovers, The Morrison Inn.
Morrison schools. Its small size accommodates only two elementary/middle schools, but Morrison is within five miles of Jefferson County High Schools in Lakewood and Morrison. You can check out the schools, and find homes near specific schools, by using the links above.
