Lyons, Colorado: a brief history. The discovery of gold along Colorado’s Cherry Creek began the Pike’s Peak or Bust Gold rush of 1858, and nearly 50,000 gold seekers soon flooded the surrounding area. A small number of them actually made their fortunes. Those who didn’t needed other ways to support their families. Some of those who decided to farm settled at the base of the red sandstone cliffs where the north and south branches of the St. Vrain River join. Among them was quarryman Edward Lyon, who recognized the sandstone’s potential as a building material. He founded the Lyons Rock and Lime Quarry, and when the railroad reached Lyons in 1884, his success was assured. At one time the Lyons quarries employed over one thousand workers and shipped the red stone all over the United States. The University of Colorado at Boulder was built with it, and fifteen of Lyon’s original red sandstone structures are on the National Register of Historic Places. The demand for sandstone declined with the invention of modern cement, but experienced a rebirth with the arrival of sandstone cutting machines. Today Lyons’ quarries have enough advance orders to keep them busy for several years.
