A brief history of Larkspur, Colorado. On March 24, 1860, the Town of Huntsville was founded at the eastern boundary of Colorado’s Front Range, in what is now Southwest Douglas County. Over the next decade, Huntsville saw the arrival of the D.C. Oakes sawmill, the Bear Cañon Post office, and the Glen Grove school. By 1871, Huntsville had grown sufficiently to warrant being moved to its present location, when Colorado’s First Lady Elizabeth Hunt renamed it Larkspur after the delicate blue wildflower.

In 1872, railroad owner John D. Perry purchased several homesteads at “Pleasant Park” near Larkspur with the intention of building a ranch. Sixteen years later, Perry founded the Red Stone Town Land and Mining Company to begin construction of a resort at what he had come to call “Perry Park.” In the ensuing century, Larkspur remained a small foothill ranching community, with a current population of under four hundred. But in 1967, Perry Park was sold to the Colorado Western Development Company, which opened the Perry Park Country Club in 1971, and has continued to develop the property with single family residences and medium-sized horse properties.

Larkspur attractions. In addition to the Perry Park and Bear Dance golf courses, Larkspur offers its residents easy access to the surrounding Pike National Forest, and to Mueller State Park, where they can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, fishing, and hunting. And for six weeks every summer, the hills around Larkspur spring to life with characters straight out of Shakespeare, when over 180,000 visitors descend on them to celebrate the Renaissance Festival, complete with jousting tournaments and court jesters.

In the neighborhood. For those who can’t resist a bargain, the Prime Outlet Mall in Castle Rock has a wide variety of name-brand merchandise at discount prices, as well as loads of restaurants. And Larkspur is only 30 minutes from the Denver Tech Center, 45 from downtown Denver, and 25 from Colorado Springs.

Larkspur: where to dine. The recently opened Larkspur Pizzeria and Café, unusual for a pizzeria in that it has its own chef, has received rave reviews for its calzone. Nearby Castle Rock’s Augustine Grill lets guests enjoy the atmosphere of a restored Victorian home while dining on such delicacies as beef tenderloin with ancho-cranberry demi-glace or grilled chicken breast with prosciutto and peas on a bed of cranberry almond rice blend, all accented with a parmesan cream sauce. Their signature dessert is crème brûlée with a hint of raspberry and almond.

Larkspur today. Larkspur, with its surrounding unspoiled forests and breathtaking views of the Front Range, and its proximity to both Denver and Colorado Springs, gives residents the best of everything Colorado has to offer.
