Kiowa, Colorado: trails of the Old West. Then the farmers and ranchers of Kiowa suffered through the Dust Bowl and Depression of the 1930s, and a 1935 flood which washed out the railroad and eliminated Elizabeth as a shipping facility for their crops. Both Elbert County’s and Kiowa’s populations fell significantly as residents headed for Denver is search of prosperity. Elbert County, in fact, was the third fastest growing county in the U.S. in the 1990s. Both Elizabeth and Kiowa are being eyed for business and light industrial parks.

The 12,500 acre Sweet Ranch outside Kiowa is on the market.
A private developer is trying to create a toll road, the Prairie Falcon Parkway Express, which would extend 210 miles from Fort Collins to Pueblo, through the heart of the Bijou Basin.

Kiowa is a prime target. Whether all of the current major development plans for the Kiowa area come to fruition or not, it does seem that both Kiowa and Elbert County have been discovered.
