Kiowa, Colorado: trails of the Old West. Situated where the Pony Express Butterfield Trail and the Smoky Hill Stage Trail intersected about 55 miles southeast of Denver, Kiowa was officially established in 1869. With its location in the water-rich Bijou Basin, a grassland in the heart of a valley surrounded by pine-covered ridges and sandstone formations, Kiowa was home to several cattle grazing operations and sawmills during the 1860s and 1870s. The forests of the region supplied Denver builders with much of their lumber.

Bypassed? Here, have a drink. In 1888, the Rock Island Railroad was routed to Elizabeth, putting Kiowa even farther off the beaten track. Things did not pick up until 1912, when Adolph Coors bought the old stage depot site, and built a saloon. Kiowa celebrated by incorporating.

Hard times. Passage of the Prohibition Amendment in 1919 put the pinch on the saloon. Then the farmers and ranchers of Kiowa suffered through the Dust Bowl and Depression of the 1930s, and a 1935 flood which washed out the railroad and eliminated Elizabeth as a shipping facility for their crops. Both Elbert County’s and Kiowa’s populations fell significantly as residents headed for Denver is search of prosperity. Some revitalization started in 1957 when Kiowa received a boost from the U.S. Government with the Kiowa and Box Elder Creek check dam and channel improvement projects.

Kiowa today... Kiowa is a little over an hour from both Denver and Colorado Springs, along Colorado’s scenic Route 86. And it is only half-an-hour’s drive from Castlewood Canyon State Park at Franktown, where visitors can enjoy hiking, rock climbing, and birdwatching. Oh yes, and shopping.

...and here comes the future. Although the citizens of Elbert County are doing their best to control it, growth is coming. They have so far managed to stall the proposed Spring Valley Vistas development which would have more than doubled, on fourteen hundred acres, the number of residences in the rest of the County’s more than eighteen hundred square miles. Elbert County, in fact, was the third fastest growing county in the U.S. in the 1990s. Both Elizabeth and Kiowa are being eyed for business and light industrial parks.

  • The 12,500 acre Sweet Ranch outside Kiowa is on the market.
  • A private developer is trying to create a toll road, the Prairie Falcon Parkway Express, which would extend 210 miles from Fort Collins to Pueblo, through the heart of the Bijou Basin.
Kiowa is a prime target. Whether all of the current major development plans for the Kiowa area come to fruition or not, it does seem that both Kiowa and Elbert County have been discovered.
