Gill, Colorado: a brief history. Gill is one of 34 unincorporated communities in rural Weld County, about fifteen miles northeast of the County Seat at Greeley. The area around Greeley, in the 1880s and 1890s, was famous for its potatoes, and at the beginning of the 20th century, there were enough irrigation canals to support a massive sugar beet industry. German and Russian immigrants came to the area to work in the sugar beet fields, and several of the immigrant families settled in Gill. The town has maintained its agricultural roots and today is the site of several major cattle and horse breeding operations.

Gill Attractions. Gill, situated in Colorado’s Front Range, offers easy access to Greeley, Loveland, and Fort Collins. Twenty minutes from Greeley, and about forty-five minutes from either Loveland or Fort Collins, it is close to the urban amenities of all three. Greeley’s Centennial Village Park is an outdoor museum with 45 structures and hands-on exhibits which allow visitors to experience a taste of life on the Colorado frontier between 1860 and 1920. Gill CO homes are also about 35 minutes for the Pawnee National Grassland, 193,000 acres of pristine Colorado prairie with chalk bluffs and sandstone buttes to attract hikers. It is also one of Colorado’s best birdwatching sites.

Gill today. Gill Colorado remains a small Colorado open range town, with a farm-based economy. But its Weld County location may mean that change is in its future. Weld County is expected to grow at an annual rate of abut 3% a year over the next decade. This is twice the projected growth rate of the state of Colorado. Most of Weld County’s growth has occurred in the southwestern part of the county along the I-25 and Highway 85 corridors, and the area surrounding Gill is still agricultural. The anticipated growth of Weld County, however, is expected to put pressure on agricultural landowners to develop their properties. Some unincorporated areas of the county, like those surrounding Gill, have already seen large lot development and are increasingly attractive to those who want to commute to Denver while maintaining a more rural life-style.
