He organized a claim district and called it Franktown, to record the land holdings of all the area’s settlers. In 1864, he bought the California Ranch outright. Franktown the Douglas County seat and remained so until 1874. When the arrival of the railroads in 1870 made the Cherry Creek Stage Route obsolete, Franktown became a grange- and church-centered agricultural village. Things slowed to a sleepy pace, and during the twentieth century the population dropped below a hundred. Now, even as the metropolitan Denver area is experiencing explosive growth, the residents of unincorporated Franktown and the surrounding area – including modern new housing developments – still number between four and five thousand. They strive to maintain and preserve their small-town way of life.
Franktown attractions and activities. Franktown, situated on the high prairie at the north end of Colorado’s Black Forest, has both areas heavily forested with ponderosa pine, and breathtaking vistas of the Rockies. Its proximity to Castlewood Canyon State Park makes it a popular stop for hikers and bikers on their way to roam the trails along the park’s canyon walls. Those walls offer rock climbing experiences to climbers of all abilities, and the ruins of the Castlewood Canyon Dam, destroyed by a 1933 flood, is a favorite site of the area’s many bird watchers.
Small town, home town. Pike’s Peak Grange No. 163, established in 1908 and listed on the National Register of Historical Landmarks, is the same grange hall that, for almost a century, has been the gathering place in which generations of Franktown residents danced, held community suppers, and took care of business at town meetings. A museum of Franktown’s history, housed in a one-room schoolhouse on the outskirts of the town, has exhibits ranging from pioneer farming implements and mining gear to archaeological finds.
Location and amenities. Located at the junction of State Routes 83 and 86, about 40 minutes southeast of Denver, and a half hour northeast of Colorado Springs, Franktown is within easy reach of all their world-class cultural, sporting, shopping, and dining experiences. And for those who want to sample the local cuisine, the carnitas at Medina’s are a reasonably-priced and highly regarded specialty.
