Evans CO real estate
Location and surroundings.
Situated at the southeast corner of the greater Greeley area, Evans is a separate city with a long and colorful history next to its neighbor and sometimes rival. The county seat has been in both places, with tales of skullduggery involved in some of the changes back and forth. Evans was founded in 1869, a year before Greeley. When settlers came out from New York in 1807 to establish an agrarian utopia four miles from the earlier little settlement, the area really started to take off. These days, Evans CO real estate
doesn’t include a lot of agriculture in its seven or so square miles. The surrounding land, though arid and barren by nature, was transformed by irrigation into a rich and fertile haven. Even today, in Weld County over 70% of harvested cropland is irrigated.
Founding and development.
Evans was named for Territorial Governor John Evans, whose connection with the infamous Sand Creek Massacre clouded his name. Almost as a matter of redemption, he later founded the Denver Seminary which later became the University of Denver. He was also a physician, and founded a number of hospitals across the country, and he was the founder of Northwestern University. In addition to our town here, and Mount Evans, the city of Evanston Illinois was also named for him. Now, the Governor’s Colorado namesake city finds itself at what has become a major regional crossroads at US Highways 85 and 34. Evans CO homes
are within sight of the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, with the following large cities from right next door to about an hour’s drive: Greeley, Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins, Cheyenne, Boulder and Denver.
Growth and Economics.
The mission statement of the City of Evans
includes the following key points: “...smart growth, economic prosperity and cultural diversity....” which are evident in the city’s growth. According to the Census Bureau there were 9,514 people here in 2000, and just a few years later there were 16,400. The corresponding growth in Evans Colorado real estate
reflects the city’s philosophy of planned, responsible and sustained growth, with a priority on improving the community’s quality of life. Although to some extent Evans is a “bedroom community,”there is a substantial amount of economic activity. Employment is strong and local, with the majority of Evans workers commuting less than 20 minutes to work. The largest numbers of jobs are in construction, mining, retail establishments and health care. Following these heavy hitters, which account for 60% of employment, are hotel & restaurant, other services, manufacturing, wholesale & transportation, and other categories such as professional, financial and administrative work. The unemployment rate is the same as the US overall rate, and the overall cost of living is 91.1% of the US national average.
