Englewood, Colorado: A brief history In 1858, William Green Russell and a small group of Georgia miners discovered gold in Little Dry Creek, and the “Pike’s Peak or Bust” Gold Rush began. The gold deposits in the Denver area were quickly exhausted, however, and some of those who came to mine decided to stay on and farm. Among them was an Irish immigrant named Thomas Skerritt, who homesteaded a 640-acre property with the area’s first cabin, which he named “Shadyside.” Skerritt also engaged in road-building. Attaching a log to the rear of his wagon, he dragged a thirty-yard wide path from Shadyside to Cherry Creek, and the route is to this day called “Broadway.” Broadway was designed to attract settlers to the area and improve the value of Skerritt’s growing land holdings.
The area surrounding Skerritt’s property became known as “Orchard Place” thanks to the plantings of another farmer, Jacob Jones. But, in spite of its pastoral name, the last two decades of the 19th century saw it taken over by gambling houses and saloons, so the residents decided fight back and incorporated in 1903. They named their new city “Englewood,” meaning “wood of the nook,” after the former Illinois home town of Jacob Jones, their newly-elected reform-platform mayor.Englewood Attractions: Englewood offers easy access to all of Denver’s sporting, cultural, dining, and shopping via U.S. 85, also known as the Santa Fe corridor.
