The high prairie. At an elevation of 6,530 feet the air is clean and the sky is a deep cobalt blue. The rolling terrain and occasional bluffs and washes are host to ranches connected to a pioneering history, as well as modern developments with everything from starter homes to palatial western estates. Over half of Elbert County’s almost 20,000 residents live in Elizabeth CO. Real estate with the Elizabeth mailing address includes about 1,500 people who live within the 0.9 square mile boundaries of the town itself, and many more in the surrounding rural area. The area is at the northern end of Colorado’s famed Black Forest and has significant stands of stately ponderosa pine. Even with all the wooded area, there are still excellent views of the snowcapped Rocky Mountains.

European settlement of the area began with the first ranchers in the late 1850s, and by the late 1870s there were several lumber mills on area ranches, big operations that drew workers to the area. The railroad came in 1881. The story is told that the first train passing through town brought a young lady, Elizabeth Hubbard, who asked either her brother-in-law the Governor or local residents (accounts vary) to name a town after her. The town was incorporated with dear Elizabeth’s name in 1884. We’re glad she had such a pretty name; it outlasted the railroad, which abandoned the line after floods in the 1930s.

Small as it is, the town of Elizabeth has everything you’ll need – a big grocery and some convenience stores, doctors, dentists and other professional offices, auto repair and services, banks, insurance and movie rentals. And places to have your hair and nails done, of course. Restaurants include a few representatives of the big chains, but mostly hometown-owned family places. For your big-time retail shopping you’ll want to go the 17 miles or so to The Outlets at Castle Rock and try out the major regional outlet mall that draws serious shoppers from all over the country. Of course the major markets of Denver and Colorado Springs are an easy drive as well, for both shopping and commuting. The glorious views along the way make driving any direction in Colorado a pleasure. As far as schools are concerned, the school system is under local control with the Elizabeth School District serving all grades and levels.

The Elizabeth Stampede, held in June each year, draws Pro Rodeo competitors from all over the country. The Stampede has consistently been voted "Best Small Rodeo of the Year" by the PRCA Mountain States Circuit. The event features roping, bull riding, amateur events, a western band providing music, and even a parade. If you haven’t worked on earning your big silver belt buckle yet, this could be your chance to go for it!
