Eldorado Canyon CO real estate information. Homes in the Eldorado Canyon area are few and far between, which is part of the appeal for those who live there. In addition to the tiny roadside town of Eldorado Springs, the area extends up the canyon to the west for almost three miles, and about a mile south of the canyon covering unbelievably beautiful, rugged canyonlands. There are only about 295 housing units in the area and they come up for sale only infrequently, so it is not worthwhile to talk in terms of averages. Each one of the Eldorado Canyon homes that appears on the market is a special case.
El Dorado Canyon: a brief history. From time immemorial, a rain and snow-fed stream has descended eastward from the Continental Divide in the Rockies to the foothills which now surround Eldorado Springs. In those foothills they carved canyon walls hundreds of feet high, and that sheltering canyon became the home of the Colorado Ute Indians and of the wildlife which supported them.
One of the unique features of the canyon, which undoubtedly attracted the Utes, was its Artesian spring, which maintained a constant flow of 76-degree water.

Though the name of the canyon comes from the golden color of the lichen growing on the surfaces of the canyon walls – dorado means “gilded” – the real treasure of the canyon lay not in gold but in that Artesian spring. In 1905, Frank Fowler, the head of the Moffat Lakes Resort Company, saw the potential of the area at the mouth of what was now known as South Boulder Creek, and decided to build a resort where wealthy Denverites could ”take the waters” in the manner of visitors to New York State’s Saratoga Springs.Eldorado Springs now. The tiny community of Eldorado Springs, which grew up around the resort, has not changed much in the last century, and still qualifies as a “Census Designated Place” instead of an actual town. It is a collection of both quaint and modern residences, home to less than 400 people in an area extending from west of Eldorado Canyon State Park to Highway 93 on the east. Eldorado Springs itself is accessible only by a gravel road off Colorado State Route 170.
Eldorado Springs attractions. Eldorado Springs continues to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors, thanks to the establishment of the Eldorado Canyon State Park. The State Park attracts rock climbers of all levels of expertise from all over the world to its more than five hundred climbing routes. There are several climbing school and guide services that operate in the park. Less-adventurous visitors can enjoy fishing in South Boulder Creek, eleven miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, spectacular scenery and abundant wildflowers. At the entrance to the State Park there is a spring-fed swimming pool with changing rooms and snack bar.
Living in Eldorado Springs. Eldorado Springs and the Eldorado Canyon area offer residents an easy drive to the dining, business, shopping, and cultural venues of Boulder, while maintaining a nearly commercial development-free character. Its single commercial enterprise of significance is Eldorado Artesian Springs, Inc, the bottled water company, which owns the swimming pool and several of the community’s homes and buildings.
