All in all, there are usually from 90 to 130 homes for sale (almost all of which are single family homes). The price for single family residences average about $278K, and the average price for condominiums is approximately $147K. You will occasionally find homes on the market for as low as $50K for a little old bungalow, and at the top end of the market $1.5 to $2 million will get you a spacious home with lots of amenities on good acreage. The population in the town of Eaton as of the last census was 2722, and there were 1086 housing units. Eaton, Colorado: a brief history. Eaton is a farming community located about seven miles north of Greeley, the Weld County seat. Weld County is the third largest agricultural area in the United States, and much of Eaton’s history is centered around the county’s sugar beet, potato, and cattle farming industries.

Eaton is named for one of its founders, Benjamin Eaton, who played an important role in bringing irrigation water to the high plains of Weld County. It was established in 1892, and in 1905 became the home of the Potato Growers Company. The Potato Growers Company was a cooperative of local farmers who wished to eliminate the costs of marketing their crops through produce dealers. They were successful, and by 1910 Weld County had become the second-largest potato growing county in the U.S. The company is now known as Agland Inc., and tells quite an interesting history of agricultural development in the area. According to the sign at the edge of town, Eaton calls itself “The Garden of Eaton.”

One of Eaton’s more obscure claims to fame is that in May of 1931, a 2.5 inch meteorite fell in the garden of W. H. Foster, who later sold it to the American Meteorite Museum for $5.00.

Eaton attractions.

  • Surrounded by the vast spaciousness of Colorado’s Front Range, Eaton is minutes from the Centennial Village Museum at Greeley. Centennial Village is an outdoor museum, established in 1976, to showcase the history of Weld County from 1860 to 1920.
  • Eaton is less than an hour from the Pawnee National Grassland, nearly 200,000 acres of protected prairie land rich in wildlife and offering hiking and equestrian trails, camping, picnicking, and great bird-watching and stargazing opportunities.
  • The Eaton Country Club, opened in 1923, has a 6700-yard course, and Eaton is within fifteen miles of all the courses in Greeley, Windsor, and Fort Collins.
  • And Eaton is, of course, only thirty miles from all that the Rocky Mountains offer for hikers, climbers, fishers, campers, and anyone who just wants to enjoy the kind of scenery that Theodore Roosevelt once said “bankrupts the English language.”

Good Eaton. (Well, they started it!) Mexican food lovers are sure to find something tempting at the Rio Grande in Greeley. One of their specialties is Yucatan Shrimp, marinated and flame broiled with fresh peppers, tomatoes, and onions, and accompanied by an order of the house’s fresh guacamole.

Eaton today. Eaton has retained its feel of a small-town farming community, but is participating in the growth of Weld County. According to the 2000 census, was one of Colorado’s twenty fastest-growing cities. The I-25 corridor in Weld County is bringing in 21st century businesses as well, with companies including Eastman Kodak and Owens-Illinois making large investments in the area. And with the vast amount of open land still available in Weld County, growth won’t be ending any time soon!
