Dacono, Colorado: a brief history. Dacono was incorporated in 1908 with a name composed from the first two letters of three of its residents, Daisy Baum, Cora Van Vorhies, and Nora Brooks. Situated about twenty miles north of Denver, Dacono is one of three coal mining communities now referred to as Carbon Valley, or the Tri-Towns.

At one time there were over one hundred mines in the coal fields surrounding Dacono. But by World War II natural gas had replaced coal as a source of energy and the mining industry had largely shut down.

Dacono is in southwest Weld County, the third most productive agricultural area in the entire United States. Weld Countyís four thousand square miles hold vast expanses of cattle ranges and grain and sugar beet fields.

Dacono attractions. For NASCAR lovers, Dacono offers the Colorado National Speedway. Saturday night racing starts on the first Saturday of April, and continues until the first Saturday of October.

Fifteen miles from Dacono is the Fort Vasquez Museum. It features a reconstruction of an 1837 adobe at the the site of the fur-trading post of Louis Vasquez and Andrew Sublette. The fort was frequented by mountain men, including Baptiste Charbonneau and Jim Beckwourth.

The Weld County seat, Greeley, is home to Centennial Village. An eight-acre site, it is devoted to showcasing life on the Colorado Plains from Civil War times to the 1920s. It is about thirty-five miles from Dacono.

For golfers, thereís the Saddleback Golf Club in Longmont. About fifteen miles outside Dacono, itís a championship par-72 layout with facilities for group outings and weddings.
