The lake itself: Carter Lake, Colorado. Located west of Loveland, Carter Lake is an 1100-ace, three-mile by one-mile reservoir surrounded by a thousand acres of foothills in the Carter Lake County Park. Carter Lake was created as a part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project which was designed to provide drinking water, hydroelectric power, and irrigation to Colorado’s agricultural eastern plateau. The massive project, completed in 1954, brought water from the Colorado River through a thirteen-mile tunnel beneath the Continental Divide and into the South Platte, Cache de la Poudre, and St. Vrain Rivers of Colorado’s Front Range. Carter Lake is about three miles northwest of Berthoud, a farming community stablished in the 1870s and, thanks to its location in the rich farmland of the Front Range, known as the “Garden Spot” of Colorado.

Carter Lake attractions. Birdwatchers will find the waters of Carter Lake, and the surrounding Ponderosa Pine covered foothills, an ideal habitat for waterfowl. The lake is extremely popular with Colorado’s boulder climbers, and its “Big Kahuna Roof” boulder has been named by at least one expert climber as the state’s best V5 level climb. The Fawn Hollow Trail in Carter Lake County Park is also popular with rock climbers, hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. The Carter Lake Sundance Trail, three miles long, has a half-mile of wheelchair accessible pavement and is also open for horse riding. Carter Lake CO homes are, of course, right up next to all the fishing, scuba diving, and sailing their happy owners could wish for. The Carter Lake Sailing Club holds a regatta every summer. Loveland’s Mariana Buttes and Cattail Golf Courses are within half an hour of Carter Lake, as are all of Loveland’s dining, shopping, medical, and cultural facilities. And last, but certainly not least, the Carter Lake Area is less than an hour from Denver to the south, and Estes and Rocky Mountain National Parks to the west.

Carter Lake Now and in the future. In 2004, Larimer County purchased 1687 acres of land west of Carter Lake and is anticipating having it ready for public use by 2010. So the Carter Lake community seems assured that its unspoiled rustic charm will, for a very long time, be preserved from the residential developers who have recently discovered the Berthoud-Loveland area!
