Bailey, Colorado: a brief history. The town of Bailey was incorporated in 1864. In Colorado’s Pike National Forest, Bailey is half a mile higher than Denver, forty-five miles to the northeast. It’s been enjoyed by Coloradans ever since before William and Ann Bailey built a stage station and hotel at a site known as Bailey’s Ranch. Bailey also built Elizabeth Entriken’s hand-hewn log cabin, now on display at the McGraw Memorial Park as the town’s only remaining original structure.

The Denver, South Park, and Pacific Railroad finally reached Bailey in 1878. That same year, the Bailey Post Office opened. Former Colorado governor John Evens had established the railroad to access the enormous timber resources of the Platte Canyon.

The area known as Platte Canyon includes Bailey and a handful of other small mountain communities including Shawnee and Grant. The many logging trails left behind with the demise of the timber industry make the region a favorite of mountain bikers.

Bailey attractions. Guanella Pass, open all year, connects the Platte Canyon area to the town of Georgetown. A national scenic and historic byway, the pass is ablaze every September with breathtaking vistas of shimmering golden aspen groves. And during warm weather, the pass allows hikers and bikers access to the historic mining areas of Geneva City and Waldorf. The nine wilderness areas of the Pike National Forest offer fishing streams, ski resorts, and hundreds of miles of trails for back country enthusiasts. The Lost Creek Wilderness area is a vast expanse of polished granite formations. It is home to the “Lost Creek” as well as to elk, black bears, mule deer, and one of Colorado’s largest herds of bighorn sheep.

Where to stay and dine in Bailey. The Bailey Lodge, a pet-friendly establishment overlooking the Platte River, has its own pay-to-fish trout pond. And a stretch of the trout-rich South Platte River waters flow through its grounds. It’s also convenient to hiking and bridle trails, kayaking, rafting and cross country skiing.

When you’re looking for sustenance after day in Bailey’s back country, try Bailey’s Hog Heaven Bar-B-Que. A family establishment with full meals under $10, their specialty ia Barbecue, but they also offer soups, salads, vegetarian entrees, and desserts.

Bailey today. Still unincorporated, Bailey is surrounded by numerous mountain subdivisions whose homeowners account for about 9,000 of Park County’s some 14,000 residents. Park County now has the third-fastest growth, in terms of percentages, of all of Colorado’s counties. With a dental clinic, health center, five general merchandise stores, two newspapers, and a public library, Bailey has all the essentials!
