History of Arvada, Colorado.  Homes, businesses, parks and all kinds of activity. That’s what you see now, but at first it was all about gold. Well, gold and celery. That’s what put Arvada Colorado real estate on the map. The gold that Lewis Ralston found in 1850 got him five dollars his first day out, and had him and many others coming back for more. Then came the farmers and merchants, selling produce and supplies to the prospectors. For a time the rich earth made the area the “Celery Capital of the World.” Now, you see Wadsworth Boulevard on your map? That major thoroughfare was named after Benjamin Wadsworth, a prominent 1860’s landowner and the town’s first Postmaster. Having a busy street named after you is really something – but the larger distinction of having a town named after you, thanks to Benjamin’s wife Mary, went to her brother-in-law Hiram Arvada Haskins. And all along you probably thought Arvada was a Native American name meaning “Place by the valley with lakes and great views of the mountains under blue sky.” Now when you drive on Wadsworth Blvd, thank Ben’s wife’s brother-in-law Hiram for the use of his middle name.

The Center has undertaken an expansion program to even further enhance its programs. There will be additional space for community groups with a new black box theater, more room for museum and collection storage, expanded galleries and new classroom space for education programs. Historic Olde Town Arvada, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is another fine feature of the community.
